Al Shank Sez……..It’s Boot Scramble Time Again!

IT’S HERE!! Time for the Seward County PRCA Rodeo Boot Scramble and we are proud to sponsor it.

There are many things that define rural America and rodeo is one of them. It truly is a sport that encompasses all of America. The oldest rodeo in America started in 1869  at Deer Trail, Colorado. The Deer Trail folks also claim it is the first and oldest rodeo in the world as well. The event has been held for 153 years including July 8th and 9th of this year.

But would you surprise you to learn that the 10th oldest rodeo is in Pilesgrove/Woodstown, New Jersey? As they say….that just doesn’t sound right…..get a rope. It was established in 1929 and first held as a part of the Salem County Fair by Howard Harris Sr. and his son, Howard “Stoney” Harris Jr. It was put on hold for WW II and restarted in 1955 when Stoney’s son returned from college after winning the National Intercollegiate All Around Rodeo Championship. Quite a rodeo legacy for a family from a state most of us don’t associate with rodeo, New Jersey.  

Now back to our local boot scramble, held as a part of the rodeo at the Seward County Fairgrounds Rodeo Arena there will be two scrambles for the kids…..one tonight, August the 19th and one tomorrow night, Saturday the 20th right after the Mutton Busting about 7:30 or so each evening. There will be four age groups ranging from age 4 to age 11. Here is how it works….the kids take off their boots, we mix them in a pile, the kids race to the pile to retrieve their boots, put them on and head back to the finish line. The fastest in each group wins a cash prize. So put on your boots and cowboy hats and come on out to the Seward County PRCA Rodeo.
